Rollover Status |
Vehicle one (V1 - case vehicle), a 2002 Subaru Forester, 4-door utility vehicle was traveling west in the westbound lane of a two-lane, two-way roadway and was negotiating a right curve. Vehicle two (V2), a 2002 Buick Rendezvous, 4-door utility vehicle was traveling east in the eastbound lane of the same roadway and was negotiating a left curve. It was daylight, snowing, and the bituminous road was icy. The driver of V1 lost control on the icy road and began to rotate counterclockwise. V1 rotated approximately 90 degrees, crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound lane. The driver of V2 could not avoid V1 and the front of V2 struck the right side of V1 in a T-type configuration. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling vehicle damage. The 36-year-old male driver of V1 (case occupant) was using the available three-point seat belt but no airbags deployed in the driver's seating position. He was transported via ground ambulance to a regional level-one trauma center. |
The case occupant is the 185 cm (6' 1"), 100 kg (220 lb), 36-year-old male driver of a 2002 Subaru Forester, 4-door utility vehicle who lost control of his vehicle. The case vehicle rotated 90 degrees, and was struck on the right side (T-type configuration) by the front of a 2002 Buick Rendezvous, 4-door utility vehicle. The impact was classified as severe. The WinSmash reconstruction program calculated a delta-v of 55 kmph (34 mph), which appeared to be consistent with the observed damage. The case occupant was using the available three-point seat belt. No airbags deployed in his seating area. A side airbag deployed from the right-front seat backrest, but no one was occupying that position. In response to the three o'clock direction of force (100 degree PDOF), the driver moved to the right and rearward, relative to the vehicle interior. He sustained a right parietal scalp laceration from contact with the right roof siderail. He sustained three rib fractures (right #1 and #2 antero-lateral, and left #2 antero-lateral) with a right pneumothorax, a lateral sternal fracture, and a right acromio-clavicular joint separation from contact with the B-pillar. |
