Configuration Angle/sideswipe
Summary Vehicle one (V1), a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis, was traveling westbound in the first lane of a two-lane, two-way roadway, approaching a T-intersection with a side street on its left. Vehicle two (V2), a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, was ahead of V1 in the same lane. V1 moved left and passed a non-contact vehicle as V2 was executing a left turn at the intersection. V1 veered right and began to rotated clockwise. The left side of V1 impacted the back of V2 in a sideswipe motion. V1 continued moving northwest and rotating. V1 departed the road over the north curb, impacting the curb with its front wheels. V1 then impacted a pole off the road with its left side. V1 rotated counter-clockwise about the pole and came to rest off the road.

V1 was towed due to damage; V2 was not towed. Eight people were occupying V1 (a six-passenger vehicle). The driver of V1 left the scene without reporting injuries. The center-left front row passenger was injured and transported. The center-right front row passenger and the right front passenger did not report injuries. The left rear passenger was fatally injured and declared dead at the scene. The center-left and center-right second row passengers were both injured and transported. The right rear passenger was also fatally injured and declared dead at the scene.

V1 was equipped with a first generation driver's frontal airbag, which was reported deployed, but was removed from the vehicle prior to inspection. V2 was equipped with advanced dual frontal airbags, which did not deploy.
