Case Summary

Summary Vehicle one a 2000 Subaru Impreza was traveling at a high rate of speed, heading westbound on a two lane undivided roadway approaching a curve to the right. As vehicle one was negotiating the curve to the right, the tires were leaving heavy scuff marks in the roadway, showing that the vehicle first went partially off the roadway onto the right shoulder, and further into the curve the vehicle crossed the centerline into the oncoming traffic lane.

Vehicle two a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling eastbound on the same roadway approaching a curve to the left, it appears as though vehicle two saw vehicle one crossing the centerline, and moved towards the right shoulder.

The front left of vehicle one impacted the front left of vehicle two, pushing vehicle two slightly backwards and causing vehicle two to roll onto its right side. Vehicle two came to rest on its right side on the shoulder in the bushes. The driver and passenger airbags in vehicle one and two deployed.

Vehicle three a 1996 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound behind vehicle two, and saw the collision between the two cars ahead, and hit the brakes, leaving skid marks on the roadway.

After impacting vehicle two, vehicle one continued westbound out of control rotating counter clockwise and skidding laterally towards vehicle three, the front of vehicle three impacted the right rear of vehicle one, vehicle one then rotated clockwise and came to rest on the eastbound shoulder. Vehicle three came to rest at the approximate area of impact.
The driver and passenger airbags in vehicle three deployed.

The unrestrained driver of V1 was hospitalized with multiple facial fractures and brain injuries. The restrained right front seat passenger received minor abrasion but was not treated. The unrestrained left 2nd seat passenger was fatal at the scene with crushed head. The unrestrained middle 2nd seat passenger was fatal at the scene with liver and spleen lacerations, rib fractures, lung contusions and multiple brain injury. The unrestrained right 2nd seat passenger was hospitalized with spleen laceration and hip fracture. The restrained driver of V2 was hospitalized with lung and heart contusion as well as rib fractures. The restrained driver of V3 was hospitalized with bilateral knee fractures.
