Case Summary
Crash Type Multi-vehicle

Summary Vehicle one a 1996 Dodge Neon was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of a 4 lane divided highway in the lane next to the center concrete barrier, negotiating a curve to the left. Vehicle two a 1984 BMW 528E was traveling eastbound in lane two on the same roadway. Vehicle three a 1988 Toyota 4X4 Pickup was traveling eastbound in lane one of the same roadway. Vehicle two and three were both negotiating a curve to the right.

The driver of vehicle two saw the headlights of vehicle one and swerved left. Vehicle one also swerved to the left, the front right corner of vehicle two, impacted the right side rear of vehicle one. Vehicle two impacted the center concrete barrier with its front left corner. Vehicle one rotated clockwise and into the path of vehicle three. The front of vehicle three impacted the left side doors and B-pillar area of vehicle one.

Vehicle one was equipped with a frontal driver and passenger airbags; which did not deploy in the collision. The restrained driver was fatal at the scene with aorta transection as well as rib fractures and lung laceration. The restrained passenger complained of a sore back at the scene, it is unknown if the passenger received any treatment for his injuries. Vehicle one was towed due to damage.

The driver of vehicle two, who was restrained with manual lap & shoulder belts, was not injured. Vehicle two was towed due to damage.

The driver of vehicle three, who was restrained with manual lap & shoulder belts, received minor contusions on his chest, right wrist and kneecaps but was not treated. Vehicle three was towed due to damage.
