Configuration Object off road
Summary This single vehicle night time crash occurred on a 3 lane straight and level roadway which had operable streetlights and was covered by ice and snow at the time of the crash.

Vehicle 1, a 1995 Ford Taurus, was eastbound on a three lane two direction non-divided roadway. Vehicle 1 overtook another vehicle and then began to slide on the snow and ice-covered roadway, rotated clockwise, departed the roadway, and contacted a utility pole with the left plane forward of the "B" pillar. V1 continued to rotate clockwise, separated from the pole, and came to rest partially on and partially off the right side of the road facing generally northwest.

The unrestrained driver was fatal at the scene with spinal cord transection and brain hemorrhages. The unrestrained passenger was transported with arm and leg fracture.

Vehicle was towed due to damage. Vehicle 1 was equipped with driver and passenger-side airbags; the vehicle was severely damaged and bowed and both airbags deployed.
