Summary The focus of this investigation is the fire in a 2013 Tesla Model S that resulted from a multi-event crash. The crash occurred in July 2014 within a four-leg intersection in California. The intersection was controlled by traffic signals in all directions. The Tesla was being driven by a 69-year-old male and was traveling in an eastbound direction through the intersection. The other vehicle was a 2010 Ford Escape being driven by an 83-year-old male that was initially traveling westbound. As the Tesla entered the intersection, the Ford began a left turn to travel south. The front plane of the Tesla impacted the front plane of the Ford. The Tesla was displaced in a clockwise direction, the Ford was displaced in a counterclockwise direction, and there was a second vehicle-to-vehicle impact between the left rear quarter panel of the Tesla and the right side of the Ford. The Tesla was displaced toward the southeast corner of the intersection, departed the roadway, and impacted a concrete wall where it came to rest. The driver of the Tesla was unable to exit on his own and several bystanders carried him out of the vehicle and placed him on the ground on the southwest corner of the intersection. Shortly afterward the engine compartment of the Tesla began smoking and a fire began at high-voltage traction battery. The local fire department received notification at 1247 hours. After several attempts and some assistance from Tesla, the fire was extinguished. The Tesla sustained charring and melting damage from the fire to the engine compartment area and crush damage from the three impacts. The vehicle was towed from the scene to the police storage facility. The Tesla was later declared a total loss by the insurance company. The other vehicle was towed from the scene due to damage.
