Summary | This on-site investigation focused on the crash and post-crash fire of a 2015 Tesla Model S P85D electric vehicle. The Tesla sustained frontal, left plane, and undercarriage damage when it departed the roadway and engaged approximately 70 m (200 ft) of a cable barrier guardrail system. The vehicle impacted and sheared multiple steel posts, at least two of which damaged the Tesla's undercarriage and penetrated into the lithium-ion battery pack. A fire developed as the vehicle came to rest, which ultimately consumed the forward half of the vehicle. The crash actuated the Tesla's safety belt pretensioners and deployed the driver frontal, driver knee, driver seat-mounted, and both Inflatable Curtain (IC) air bags. The 62-year-old restrained male driver of the Tesla was not injured as a result of either the crash or fire. |
