Summary | This on-site investigation focused on the origin and cause of a fire in a 2013 Tesla S electric vehicle that was equipped with the P85 performance upgrade. The vehicle overrode a tri-ball mount from a receiver hitch that was lying in the center of the right lane of an interstate. The impact deformed the undercarriage-mounted battery pack causing damage to the cells of the most forward battery module. A fire ensued in the lithium-ion battery that was confined to the frontal area of the Tesla. There were no injuries associated with this incident. |
